Four small black tattoos sit one on each finger of a hand: the letter M on the little finger, the letter E on the ring finger, a simple cat face on the middle finger and the letter W on the index finger. The lock-keeper's wife said he had gone to his sister's in Oakbridge the autumn before. Ada wrote the new address on the envelope in ink, and Pudding watched her do it with his tail curled round his feet. Then he strolled back ahead of her into the dark, no cat in the world ever having been so pleased with a job well done.
