Letters M, E, W and a star on fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with the letters M, E and W tattooed one per finger, with a small five-pointed star on the middle finger. The lettering and star are rendered in solid black ink with simple, even lines. The background shows a light tiled floor, and the gold glitter nail polish contrasts with the dark ink.

The Gull had been taking water since Tuesday, and Nell Corrigan was still arguing with the harbourmaster when the tide turned under her. "She floats," she said, holding up her hand as though the fingers were evidence. "She floats on what I say she does."

Her uncle Dennis had ink on his knuckles and a rule about starting with the easy things. Three letters for the three men who had sailed her out of Grimsby: M for Mossop, who taught her to read a chart upside down; E for Eddie Stroud, who never once missed a tide; W for Wilf, who went over the side off the Dogger Bank the winter before she was born. The star went on the middle finger, between the two hard-working ones, because Dennis said a navigator always needs a fixed point, and the star was the one thing nobody could sell her.
She had sat for it in a back room on Fish Dock Road, the shop smelling of cloves and hot machine oil, while the sea beyond the window went grey as slate. The needle hummed. Dennis watched each line settle, black and even, and said nothing about the price.
Now she laid her hand flat on the wheel. The M sat under her thumb, the E under her forefinger, the W where her ring finger rested, and the star where her grip closed hardest. She steered by the gaps between them. Out past the breakwater the light came up on the Humber, a single bright point, and she turned the Gull towards it and held her course.
