The Marigold was a Dutch barge he had bought off a widow in Gainsborough, and the previous owner had left a brass tiller pin stamped with a small hooked sign: a loop, a tail, and an arrow pointing off the end. Dad said it was the mark of the man who built her, a Scorpio boatwright, and that she would bite anyone who tried to cheat her on the water. I thought that was nonsense until the gate groaned and the river came up under us in one long shove.

We got her through by a finger's width. Afterwards, sitting on the cabin step with a flask of stewed tea going cold between us, Dad turned the pin over in his fingers and said the arrow only showed where the current was heading. He said nothing more than that, which for him was a speech.

Downstream the sun slid behind the sugar beet silos, and I rubbed the little stamped mark with my thumb until the brass warmed, the way you check a splinter has really come out.
