Black fine-line script reading Life goes on with a heartbeat trace beneath it, tattooed on a forearm.

Life goes on script with heartbeat line

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Life goes on in a flowing black cursive script, with a single thin black heartbeat line running beneath the lettering. The linework is crisp and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The design sits across the centre of the limb against a soft, slightly blurred background of fabric.

The band is halfway through "Stardust" when the bassist stops mid-bar and Mr Ashdown sits down on the edge of the stage as if he has remembered an appointment. You are behind the cloakroom hatch with a fistful of brass tokens, and you watch the dancers turn in their slow circles without yet understanding that the music has thinned to a single drum. Someone shouts for a doctor. The ambulance men come up the side stairs with a yellow box and a roll of paper that unspools behind them like a ribbon.

They work with the lights up and the floor half cleared, and you keep the hatch open because people still want their coats. A girl in a green dress asks whether the dance is cancelled. Nobody answers her. Then Ada Ashdown, who has sat by the radiator every Saturday for thirty years, rises with her handbag and says, quite clearly, that the Pavilion has never once stopped for anybody and it will not start now. The pianist finds the key. The couples drift back together, a little stiffer, and the foxtrot climbs out of the silence as if it had only paused for breath.

Later, when the ambulance has gone with its siren off and the hall smells of cold cigarettes and floor polish, you find the strip of paper caught under the stage steps. Its line rises and falls in sharp black peaks, steady for a long stretch and then, near the end, flat as a shelf. You fold it into your apron pocket. Tomorrow you will pin it above the hatch, next to the price list, where you can see it while you hand out coats and count the tokens.
