Black script tattoo reading Life goes on above a thin heartbeat trace, on the forearm.

Life goes on script with heartbeat line

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Life goes on in a flowing black script, with a single thin line beneath them that rises and falls like an electrocardiogram trace. The linework is clean and consistent, and the design is entirely black ink with no shading or colour. It is photographed close up on the inside of a forearm against a plain skin tone, with a patterned fabric visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The widow Ansell kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and she kept it the way her mother had, with the tide tables pinned by the kitchen door and the clock wound every Sunday after chapel. Her husband had gone out past the breakwater in the autumn of the great gales and the sea had brought back his boat but not him, so she took in lodgers from May to September and wrote the harbour's swell onto a slate each morning, a single wavering line, the way the boy at the lifeboat house had shown her from the old chart.

In the third week of a grey August a lad called Tom Quarrie came up the steps at a run, soaked to the knees, to say the Mary Jane had lost her rudder off the Scar and the men were pulling for the harbour. The guests crowded the parlour window. Mrs Ansell did not go to look. She took the chalk from the ledge, drew the line across the slate, and tapped it with one finger. "Watch that," she said. "Where it climbs, they're coming up. Where it flattens, they're close. Put the kettle on, Tom, they'll want tea before they want anything else."

All eight came in before dark, grey-faced and laughing at nothing. She poured tea until the pot ran dry. Years on, the lodgers still read the slate before they went down to the water, and the lintel above the door had worn so smooth that the old words had to be traced with a finger to be read, though no one in Gull Steps had ever needed telling what they meant.
