You have been painting the same sign for three days, the brush loaded with thin black enamel, and the wagon door is already dry at its corners. Mr Halloran wants it readable from the lay-by on the A11, where the last Saturday crowds still pull in. The big top behind you sags like an old horse. Half the lamps are dead, and the elephant went to a farm in Norfolk last spring.

Your letters have to lean. Dorothy taught you that when you were fourteen and sweeping sawdust for a shilling a day: keep the baseline climbing left to right, like a man walking uphill with his hat in his hand. You write the words in the order the old clown used to say them over breakfast, before the greasepaint went on. Life is beautiful. He never said it with a smile. He said it the way he checked a guy rope, tugging once to be sure it would hold.

Halloran's son arrives with the takings tin and a letter from the council. The field must be clear by Monday. He suggests you paint CLOSED underneath, in capitals, so nobody has to read anything twice. You say you will think about it. You do not think about it. You finish the loop on the final l, and it comes out cleaner than anything you have painted all season.

That evening the wind comes off the field and lifts the last of the sawdust across the verge toward the road. Cars pass without slowing, and the sign catches the headlights for a second before the dark takes it back.
