Single-line spiral on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline forms a spiral that curls inward, with a short tail that extends from the outer edge. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The tattoo sits centrally on pale skin against a dark, blurred background, with the arm running vertically through the frame.

The herring boats of Skerrow went out before the gulls woke, and every one of them came back or didn't, depending on the water. Ada Penrose mended nets on the harbour wall with a bone needle her grandmother had carved, and she worked each knot the same way: over, under, round, and a small tuck at the end that she called the turn. Nobody else in the village tucked the turn. They said it was slow.

The winter the Mary Lee went missing, Ada sat on the wall for nine days with a net across her knees. Her brother Tam was aboard. The fleet came home without him, and the other men stopped meeting her eye on the quay. On the tenth morning she unpicked the whole net down to the first knot and began again from the middle, working outward in a curl, the way the tide turns back on a sandbar before it finds the channel.
When she reached the edge she ran one last loose strand out past the rest, a tail with nothing tied to it. Old Hannah from the chandlery looked at it and said that was a hook for whatever wasn't finished. Ada said it was for the boat to follow home.
The Mary Lee came in on the evening tide with her sail torn and her crew asleep on the thwarts. Ada had already hung the net to dry, the spiral turned inward like a shell, and the loose end lay on the stones pointing at the water. Tam stepped off first and followed it up the slipway to her door.
