Thunder rolled down the valley in a flat, heavy roar. Then the sky split above the headgear and a bolt ran from the cloud to the iron wheel in three jagged kinks, white as a cut, and every lamp in the yard flickered at once. Nobody spoke. Her father had told her once that lightning hunted for the highest iron it could find and then went looking for the ground, and she had never decided whether to believe him.

At half past two the telephone in the office rang with word that the cage had held and the storm had gone over towards the Gelli fields. Ada wrote the time in the book beside the tally: forked, cracked, and nobody hurt. Outside the cloud had torn open, and the stars came through the gaps like pinpricks in black card.
