Three lightning bolt outlines

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows three lightning bolt outlines drawn with thin black linework on a plain white background. Two bolts sit upright at the top and left, and a third is angled at the lower right, each with a simple zigzag silhouette and no interior detail or shading. There is no colour, and the composition is sparse with the bolts spaced apart across the frame.

Now, Eddie Pask swears blind he was out there with a tin bucket and a length of copper wire, trying to catch the lot of them for the council. Eddie also swears he once got a pint off the Pope, so take that as you will. What I know is that the wire got hot enough to sing, the bucket went up like a firework, and Eddie came back to the boarding house with his eyebrows gone and a face like a sunburnt aubergine. Mrs Harnett dressed the eyebrows with butter and told him the sky doesn't want to be caught, it wants to be looked at properly.

So I went down to the shingle at first light, half expecting a crater. Instead there were three black scorched marks in the sand, each one shaped like a zigzag set down by a careful hand, pointing sideways the way the wind had been going. The tide had already started rubbing at them. By dinnertime they'd be gone. I stood there a long while with my hands in my pockets, and I'll tell you what I decided. Some things come down out of the sky just to show you the way they're headed, and it's no good making a fuss about it. Now who wants chips?
