Lightsaber tattoos on two index fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

Two hands rest against each other, each index finger carrying a lightsaber design with a black hilt and a long blade running along the finger. One blade is red and the other is purple, both with soft shading along the edges. The dark background and black nail polish frame the fingers in close view.

Nobody in Scarrow Hollow will say which sister struck first, and the old men at the well will tell you it was neither, that the glass did it. Their father had cut two blades from one vein of tarn-stone the year before he died, and since the crystal came from a single heart, the blades would only sing together. Ilse took the red one, because red was the colour of her mother's shawl, and Maren took the violet, because she said violet was the colour of a lie told kindly.

For a season they fought across the salt flats, blade to blade, until the dust on their boots was the only thing about them that matched. Every dawn the hum of the two blades rose and fell in one breath, so the herders said you could hear the sisters from the far dunes and never know which was winning. Neither was. When the rains came early and the flats turned to mud, the blades began to hum a shade apart, one lower than the other, as if one of them had started to tire.

Ilse found Maren at the cistern with her blade switched off, its tip dipped in the water. Neither spoke. Ilse knelt and held her own red blade beside it, and the glass, which had never once been quiet, went still in the cold. They sat there until the light changed, two hilts held in two palms, and the sound they had been making together turned out to be the only thing that had ever kept them in tune.

When they rose, the cistern water was lit red on one side and violet on the other, and the old men say that is why the well has never once been quite still.
