Lipstick and red script on a hand
Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A grey-shaded lipstick tube sits on the top of the middle finger, with its red tip extending down the side of the finger. Red script lettering runs down the hand and across the side of the finger below it, drawn in a thin, flowing line. The photograph is taken against a dark wooden surface, with the hand held up and the tattoos clearly in focus.

The shade was called Cherry Riot, and Mrs Pask had bought it from our counter every Thursday for eleven years, though she never wore it past the chapel gate. I kept the tester on the glass shelf beside the till, its cap rubbed bright by thumbs. The Monday the new stock came up from Leicester, one tube rolled under the radiator, and I was on my knees fishing for it with a hairpin when Walter from the bakery came in to complain about the bell.

Walter wanted a tin of Germolene and a word with Mr Dunn about the pavement. I gave him both, and when I turned back the lipstick was on the counter where I had left it, its red nose bent a little, like something trodden on and forgiven. I wiped it on my apron and thought of the letter I had been drafting all weekend to a man in Skegness who had promised to write in the spring and had not.
Mrs Pask came in at half past four with her basket and her good gloves. She studied the tube for a long time, then asked me to write her name on the paper bag, the way I had done for her sister's wedding. I wrote Edith in my neatest hand and looped the E like a slow ribbon. She laughed and said I was the only girl in Fenley who could make a letter sit up straight.
When she had gone I went out back and dabbed the shade on my own finger, a red bead on the skin like juice from a split cherry. It did not look like courage, only colour. But I left it there until the till closed, and for the first time since the Skegness letter I did not wipe it away.
