Purple crayon tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A hand holds a purple Crayola crayon against a forearm bearing a tattoo of a crayon in the same shape. The tattoo uses purple ink with soft grey and dark shading to suggest the paper wrapper, waxy tip and rounded edges. The background is blurred, with a green glitter nail polish visible on the holding hand.

You find the purple crayon in the lift, wedged where the doors meet the floor, its paper wrapper torn at one end. Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Harcourt House will admit to it. Mrs Okafor blames the Dunmore boys, who draw on everything, Mr Pryce says it has been down there since the council painted the lobby, and the boy from flat 62 just shrugs. You pocket it anyway, because the wrapper is almost exactly the violet of the scuff on the lift wall, and you have spent a month trying to find a colour that matches that scuff.

On the landing you test it on the back of a parking leaflet. It leaves a waxy stripe that skips over the damp patches, and when you press harder the tip snaps and the paper peels back to show the shape of a stub that somebody loved down to the nub. You wonder whose hand held it that far. You wonder whether it is worth finding out.

The next morning the lift smells of rain, and someone has drawn a door on the wall beside the buttons. It is purple, shaded grey at the edges, and it looks as if it might open onto a field if you pushed. Underneath, in careful capitals, it says IT IS NOT LOST.

You leave the crayon on the ledge inside the lift, right where you found it. Then you take the stairs for once, all fourteen floors, counting the purple handprints on the banister as you go.
