Gold arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A thin arrow runs along an extended finger, with its fletching drawn as a leafy, feathered shape at the end. The linework is delicate and the ink reads as gold or metallic rather than black or grey. The hand rests on a patterned rug, and stacked rings sit on the neighbouring finger.

Dear Marguerite, The road out past Coyote Wells has taken two more tyres since you left, and the postmistress swears the bus will run on Thursday, though she said the same last month. I am writing on the back of a seed catalogue because the paper ran out at the petrol station, which is also out of petrol.

Yesterday I found the old surveyor's arrow in the wash behind the cattle grid. Brass, green at the tip, its fletching beaten into leaves by somebody who had clearly never seen a real feather. Your father's initials are scratched on the shaft. I know you said to leave everything alone, but I took it, and it now stands against the tea tin where you would have looked for it.
The strange part is the lark. Every evening at six a single bird sits on the telegraph wire and sings the same four notes, the way you used to hum them under your breath when you were sighting along the ridge. I walked out to see whether it was waiting for something. It flew off towards the mesa, straight as a line drawn with a ruler, and I followed it until the sun dropped behind the rocks.
I think I know now where the road goes. It doesn't go anywhere. It only points, the way your father's arrow did, and waits for someone patient enough to walk to the end of it. I'm leaving the brass with the postmistress, and I'm walking on at dawn. Keep the kettle warm.
