Dear Bea, I am writing this on the bonnet of Dad's estate car in a lay-by forty miles short of Tonopah, because the signal here comes and goes like a bad conscience. Yesterday at the motel in Goldfield, Ray behind the desk said I'd been short-changed on the room, and I told him so, loudly, in front of the vending machine and two men in matching jackets. Then I did not leave like a lady. I left like weather, shoving the glass door so hard the sign rattled. Ray shouted something about my deposit. I didn't turn round.

The road out of there is so straight you start to believe it has no end. A pickup slowed beside me, and a woman with silver plaits leaned across to ask if I was lost. I said I was not, which was the first true thing I'd said since Reno. She laughed, said good for you, love, and drove on before I could thank her properly.

I wrote the phrase across the back of my hand in biro so I'd have it in front of me on the wheel. By the time I reached the junction it had smudged into a grey smear over my knuckles, and I found I didn't mind. Love, Lou.
