Lily and hummingbird tattoos on two feet

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

The left photograph shows a realistic purple lily with green leaves and detailed stamens on the top of a foot. The right photograph shows a hummingbird in mid-flight in purple and blue, with soft purple wash shapes behind it. Both tattoos use smooth shading and gradients on pale skin, with the feet shown against a light background.

The hummingbird had been in the glasshouse since Tuesday, and nobody could get it out. Mrs Pengelly propped the door with a bucket of bulbs and stood on the potting bench with a tea towel, waiting for the bird to settle on the lilies, which was what it kept doing, hovering over the Stargazers as if it had been sent to check on them.

Her grandson Owen said it had come over from the Scilly boats in a fish crate, which made no sense, but nothing made sense that June. The lilies were late. Every bulb in the long bed had put up a stalk and then sulked, and the purple ones, the old Hansons her husband had bred from a bag of seed bought off a Newlyn man, had gone the colour of bruised plums at the tips.

On the third afternoon the bird stopped hovering. It sat on the rim of a clay pot, its throat working, and looked at her with the flat patience of a clerk. She didn't move. Owen opened the far vent and the air came in smelling of brine and cut grass. The bird went out like a thrown stone and over the roofs toward the harbour, where the boats were coming in low in the water.

Next morning the lilies opened all at once, every one, as if someone had told them. Mrs Pengelly cut the first stem for the church and found a single green leaf curled round it, tight as a fist, that she had never planted. She left it on the bench where the light could find it.
