Subjects include a heart on a skewer, a beer mug, chips, a basketball hoop, socks, a cuckoo clock with a bird, a galloping horse, a cat in a box, a feather and a phone showing a heart. The linework is even and uniform, with no shading and no colour apart from the blue background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sixth box of the week held a basketball hoop without its ball, a cuckoo clock someone had clearly tried to silence, and a pair of socks still knotted together at the ankle. Mrs Okafor logged them under Miscellaneous, because the form at Ashby Cross lost property had no box for a bird that would not stop singing.

I carried the boxes down to the back shelves myself, the way I always do on a Thursday. The heart on its skewer was still bright with the sauce it had come in, and the beer mug had a tidemark of dried foam inside. Nobody ever claims the chips, but I kept the cone upright anyway, in case. Somewhere in the pile a phone kept lighting up with the same red heart, over and over, until its battery gave up in the dark.

On the Friday a woman in a green anorak came to the counter and asked, before I had said a word, whether we had anything with a horse on it. She described the feather next, the one with a single black drop at its tip, and then the cat in the cardboard box, which she said was never meant to be found. She did not ask for any of them back. She only wanted to know they had been kept somewhere safe.

I stamped her slip and told her they were on the shelves. Then I went through the boxes again, slowly, until I found the cuckoo clock with its little door hanging open. The bird was still inside, wound tight, and when I lifted it out it finally let out one note, as if it had waited all week for someone to take it seriously.
