Line of elephants across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long blonde hair is photographed from behind, showing a row of small elephants in black outline walking in a line across her upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading, and the tattoo is entirely black ink. A gold chain with beads and a tassel runs across the back beside the design, and a partial tattoo is visible on her left upper arm.

The lorry from Maidstone was late again, so the pickers sat under the Bramley trees and waited, and Nan Pryce pulled a cardboard box from under the van seat. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel, were the elephants. There were four of them, black iron cut as thin as pastry, none longer than a thumb, and a pedlar had sworn they once pulled a ferris wheel at Margate before the war.

"Nose to tail," Nan said, and set them along the tailgate with their trunks curled to the one in front. Her granddaughter Ivy, eleven and sticky with juice, wanted to know why the smallest walked last. "Because it's learning the road," Nan said. "The big ones have walked it before."
The wasps came in over the windfalls after dinner and the pickers dragged their crates into the shade. Ivy carried the elephants down between the rows, one at a time, and lost count somewhere near the gate. When she came back the smallest was gone. She searched the grass until her knees were green and found it in the ditch, nose down in the nettles, as if it had been trying to keep pace with a column of ants.
Nan took it from her and blew the dust off. "Good," she said, and put it back at the end of the line, where it had always gone. Then she wrapped the four in the tea towel and tucked them into the van, and the last one, still damp from the ditch, stuck out a little past the others.
