Line rose and arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black line tattoo shows a stylised rose with overlapping petals at the top, joined to a long stem that tapers into a dotted line and a diamond-shaped arrowhead. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against pale skin on the forearm. The rose fills the upper left of the frame while the arrow extends diagonally toward the lower right.

The chart table in the Marguerite smelled of wet oilskin and the cheap pencil shavings you kept picking out of the cracks, and you had been told twice already that the dotted line was not decoration. Mr Halloran, the second mate, tapped the paper with the end of his pen. "Every dot is a position, lad. Every one a noon sight we actually took."

Out past the Azores the wind backed north-west and stayed there for nine days, and you learned to read the compass rose printed in the corner of every sheet. Its petals were the eight points, overlapping where the bearings crossed, and the old master had drawn it so a man could find north without thinking. You copied it onto the back of the log in ink that smudged whenever your wrist touched the page.
On the tenth morning the pencilled track bent south-east toward Falmouth, and the arrowhead you had drawn at its end looked absurdly sharp. Halloran ran his thumb down the stem and said a line with no points on it tells you where you have been but not where you are. You had counted those dots for three weeks, and not once had you written down the wind.
That night you pricked a fresh dot at the wheelhouse window, a pinhead of light where the Lizard should be, and wrote the wind beside it in a steady hand.
