Lion and clock leg sleeve in black and grey
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large leg sleeve shows a lion head with flowing mane at the upper thigh, with sunflowers and a clock face running down towards the knee and calf. The lettering on scrolls near the lower leg is legible and sits among shaded ribbons. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth and greyscale, with the person lying on a purple cushioned surface and their face not shown.

Aunt Hester kept the old lion in the field above the quay, though by my first summer on Skerrow it was more lion in name than in habit. Its mane had gone the colour of wet ash, and it slept most afternoons against the warm wall of her sunflower garden, where the flowers stood taller than my head and turned their faces to the ferry as if someone might be coming off it.

Her husband's pocket watch hung from a nail by the back door. It ran four minutes slow, and she would not hear of having it mended. "Slow is how you keep the things you mean to keep," she said, and wound it every Sunday with the same careful twist you might give a child's collar.
When the November gales cut the ferry off for a fortnight, I took the watch down to the harbour office meaning to post it across to the mechanic on the mainland. I got as far as the bench at the end of the pier. I opened the case and watched the minute hand creep through its lost minutes, while the lion's breath came faintly over the hill like a bell that had decided not to ring.
In spring I came back on the first boat, the watch still four minutes behind in my coat pocket. Aunt Hester held it to her ear, told me I was late, and handed it back. The sunflowers had already turned towards the water, and for once I did not argue.
