Lion and flower leg sleeve with pocket watch
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lies on a purple couch, showing a full leg sleeve covering the thigh down to the calf. A detailed lion head with a flowing mane sits on the thigh, surrounded by daisies and swirling foliage, while a pocket watch, a skull and lettering fill the lower leg. The work uses fine, heavily shaded linework in black and grey, with the lighting giving the lion and flowers strong depth.

Tam Ferris went up with a lantern and a tin of daisy seed, because his grandmother had told him a lion will sit still for anyone carrying flowers. He found it on the flat rock above the weir, its mane full of burrs and small gold bees, watching the water as if the water had made it a promise. It turned its head. Its eyes were the grey of wet slate, and beneath its paws lay a pocket watch on a broken chain, its lid split, the hands frozen at the hour the river took the bridge.
He sat down a long way off and opened the tin. Pinch by pinch he scattered seed across the stones, and the lion watched him do it without hunger. When the sun slid behind the hill, the watch began to tick. Nobody had wound it. The sound came up through the rock like a slow, stubborn heartbeat, and the lion lay down and closed its eyes.
Tam walked home in the dark with the watch in his pocket and the hush of the lion still in his ears. By morning daisies had pushed up through the cracks of every doorstep in Sallow Vale, and the clock in the square was running again, three minutes fast, which Mother Hesk said was the only honest thing it had ever done.
