Black and grey realism lion head with daisies and a pocket watch on a full leg sleeve, running from the thigh to the calf.

Lion and pocket watch leg sleeve

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A full leg sleeve shows a realistic lion head with a detailed mane on the thigh, surrounded by daisies and leaf work. Below the knee, a pocket watch sits among more flowers, and a banner scroll on the shin carries partly visible lettering. The tattoo uses fine, smooth shading in black and grey, and the photograph is taken from the side against a purple cushion.

The lion is painted on canvas, the mane gold and rust, and when the sun goes behind the hook-a-duck stall he looks almost alive, which is the whole trick of him, Mother says.

The watch man arrived late. He has a glass case of pocket watches he won in Cardiff, all of them stopped at different hours, and he asked me to wind the one with the cracked face because it was the only one he trusted to keep time on the road. I did it under the awning while the rain started again. It ticked like a small impatient heart. He said that was the sort of thing a person could fix only by letting it run down and starting over, and then he went off to the lemonade queue without paying me.

We are packing at dawn. I have written the banner words out four times now in pencil so I get the scroll right for the next town, though Mr Okafor says nobody reads the shin of a lion anyway. The lamps are lit along the lane. I can hear the generator coughing, and somewhere behind the caravans the watch man is calling the time out loud, to nobody, the way he always does just before we leave.
