Lion and lion cubs on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large male lion faces forward with a full mane, dominating the upper part of the design, with a lioness and two cubs sitting in grass below. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine fur texture, warm ochre and brown tones, and a dark blue night-sky background behind the lion's head. The composition stacks the lion above the family group on a curved arm, with the scene fading into the skin at the edges.

The river had gone underground in the dry month, so Hesk the surveyor followed the lioness down to the last green rim of the Vellan basin, where the grass grew in tufts no taller than a boot. She did not hurry. Behind her, two cubs tumbled through the stalks like loose thread, stopping now and then to stare at him with the flat, unbothered attention of creatures who had never been told they were prey.

The Crown wanted the borders drawn before the rains. Hesk's charter gave him the right to fix every boundary under the open sky, and the palace astronomers had given him the stars to do it by: the Gate, the Tall Hunter, the pale smear of the Ferryman's Road. He set his brass sextant on its tripod and took his readings while the old male watched from a rock on the northern ridge, his mane heavy with dust, saying nothing at all. Hesk wrote the coordinates in a neat hand and felt, for the first time in years, that the ground was telling him the truth.

By dusk he had seen the pattern. The lions moved only between the seep-holes and the thorn ridges, always in the same worn paths, and every path ended at the same dark well under the cliff. The map he had been ordered to draw would fence that well inside the Crown's lands and leave the pride to starve on the wrong side of the line. Hesk sat by the fire with the inked sheet on his knee for a long time.

In the morning the inspector found him redrawing the boundary. He had traced the lions' trails instead, pale green lines over the ochre, and beside them a note that the stars were honest witnesses and would not object. When the inspector asked why he had ignored the Crown's orders, Hesk only pointed to the cubs asleep in the grass beneath the last of the dark blue sky, and wrote one word in the margin where land met heaven: Shared.
