Lion cub and Hakuna Matata script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised orange lion cub curled in a rounded pose, outlined in thick black with soft shading and highlights across its body. The words Hakuna Matata sit to the right in black cursive script. The image is a close, straight-on photograph of the forearm on a plain grey-blue background.

"Stop tapping the tin, Baraka, you will wear a hole in the roof and the rain will have an easier road in." Mama Mwajuma did not look up from the blue cloth she was folding, though her hands were already smoothing the same corner for the third time that morning.

The bus from Kisumu was late again. Nobody in the village had seen rain since the goats were born, and the boy had counted every cloud that slid over the hill and went on toward the mountain without stopping. He carried a list in his head of everything that could go wrong: the well going dry, the price of maize, the cousin in Mombasa who had not written since Easter.

She set the cloth down and lowered herself onto the stool beside him. "When your mother was small, she used to lie on the warm step like a cub, curled up with her chin on her paws. I asked her once what she was thinking about. She said, nothing. The sun is warm, and hakuna matata, and that is enough."

"That is not a plan," Baraka said.

"No. It is a habit. The plan comes after your nap."

The van from the junction came up the track in a cloud of red dust, and the cousin climbed out with a sack of letters under one arm and a battered radio under the other. Behind him, the first fat drops began to tick on the tin roof, one, then a hundred, and Baraka, who had promised himself he would stay awake for the arrival, was already asleep on the warm step, curled round like a small orange cub.
