Single line cat on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A continuous black outline of a cat in a walking pose, with its tail curled upward at the end. The linework is even and thin, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The cat is centred on the forearm, shot close up against a pale cream background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The toll-keeper at Brent Ford had been watching the same grey cat cross the river for three mornings. It came down from the Ostmark bank at first light, walked the single plank without once lifting its feet off the wood, and went up the far side with its tail held high, as though it had paid for something. Nobody in the valley had ever seen a cat pay a toll. Nobody had ever seen one walk so straight.

The keeper, Dorota Vell, wrote every crossing in her book with the rest: two sheep, a cart of salt, a monk with a bad chest. On the third morning she stopped the cat with her broom and asked it what it carried. The cat looked at her and said nothing, which was a relief, because she had heard that the animals along that border could talk and she did not care for their arguments. Instead it lowered its head and let a folded paper fall from its mouth onto her boots.
The paper was a list in a hand she did not know. It held the names of families on both banks who had been parted by the new markers set in the spring, and beside each name was a day of the month. Dorota read until the noon bell, then opened her ledger and began copying the names into the margin, one line each, without lifting her pen.
That night the cat sat on the gate rail and waited. Dorota left the latch up for it. In the morning the river was empty, the list was gone, and every name in her margin had a small mark beside it, drawn in one unbroken stroke.
