The rose had gone brown at the rim by the third night, and Ada still wouldn't let the stagehands throw it out. She pinned it back onto the lectern herself, between the prompt book and a candle stub, while outside the village hall the trees of Hollin Wood creaked against the shutters like people wanting in.

The company had come up the lane from Stourby with two trunks, one painted backdrop of red velvet, and a play nobody in Hollin had asked for. Lady Vane had to kiss the miller's boy in the third act. She had not kissed anybody since the war, and her mouth shook every time the lamps went down. Ada knew the lines by heart but kept them on a folded card in her pocket, just in case.
On the fourth night the lamp guttered before the kiss, and in the dark something soft brushed the stage boards, the way a wet leaf does when it's dragged. Ada struck a match. The rose on the lectern had bled a dark thread onto the paper, down across the stage directions, and the red had run to the edge of the book as if it was trying to speak.
Lady Vane stepped into the light with her lips painted and parted, and said her line without looking at the boy at all. Nobody in the hall knew the play had changed. Ada wrote the new words in the margin in pencil and kept the rose.
