You open the gold compact on the drugs trolley, tilt the little round mirror until the one working strip light falls across it, and draw the colour on carefully while the drip pumps on Ward Seven tick like a clock someone forgot to wind.

Mrs Okafor in bed four has been awake since midnight, asking about the number 14 bus. You tell her the buses have stopped for the night, and she nods as though that were a decent answer and closes her eyes. Down the corridor the sister's radio murmurs the shipping forecast, and you find yourself reciting the sea areas under your breath, Dogger, Fisher, German Bight, while you snap the compact shut and slip it back into your pocket.

At half past five the mirror gets its real use. Ada from the lab comes up with a sample tray, stops at the desk, and asks whether that is the shade from the chemist on Harrow Road. You say it is the only shade that survives a night in a tunic. She laughs, too loudly for the hour, and Mrs Okafor stirs and asks whether that is the bus.

At quarter to seven the lift doors open and Mrs Okafor's son steps out in a wet coat, looking for bed four. You close the compact, tuck it away, and point him down the corridor, where the first grey light is coming over the car park and the number 14, you are fairly sure, has just started its engine.
