You left your lipstick on the coach seat after the reunion, the one with the grey case and the little rose at the base. I've carried it round in my handbag all week like contraband, which is daft, because I haven't worn red since the spring of 1989 and my mouth has gone thin as a letter opener since then.

We bought matching ones from the stall on Castle Street with our paper round money, and you pressed the gold cap onto my wrist to show me the heart was the exact colour of the Co-op sign. Yours is the one that went missing the week before the Christmas dance. I always thought you'd lost it on purpose, to make me feel guilty about the bus fare. Turns out it was in the bottom of my own school bag all along, under a Biology folder I never handed in.

I'm not posting it back. I'm bringing it to the Crown on Sunday, when we're all meant to be eating roast potatoes and pretending our husbands are interesting, and I'll hand it over across the table like a bet settled. You can tell me then which of us was the coward at the bus stop.

I tried it on in the rear-view mirror at the lights on the ring road this morning. The red came up bright as the rose on the case, and the lorry driver beside me gave a long toot and a thumbs up. I'm still not sure what I was signalling to, but I left the cap off all the way to the chemist's just to be sure.
