Lipstick tattoo on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A lipstick is tattooed on the forearm with a pink-red bullet, a gold metal case with a small red heart detail, and a teal base patterned like snakeskin. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid fills and soft shading in the colours. A dotted circle sits behind the lipstick as a framing element against the pale skin and blue cloth background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lipstick had rolled under the radiator in number seven, so Mrs Pargeter got down on the lino with a hatpin and a knee that disliked it, and fished it out by the gold case. The bullet was still the red of a pillar box after rain. Its base was teal and scaled like the good gloves Vera Drummond had worn to breakfast on Monday, and the little heart stamped on the collar was the only soft thing about it.

Vera had checked out on Tuesday with two suitcases and a debt of eleven shillings, leaving the bed made tight as a drum, which Mrs Pargeter took as a kind of apology. The bills on the hall table said the Winter Garden, Thursday to Saturday, top of the bill. On Friday the posters had changed, and a man in a brown suit was whistling outside the chemist's where Vera's photograph had hung for a week.

So on Saturday Mrs Pargeter walked the length of the prom in her church coat with the lipstick in her handbag, past the donkeys and the shuttered kiosks, and stood at the stage door until a stagehand with a cigarette behind his ear told her Miss Drummond had gone north on the early train with nothing but her voice and a rented trunk.

Mrs Pargeter put the lipstick on the windowsill of number seven, wound the clock she had no need to wind, and wrote a card in her careful hand: Left under the radiator. Heart still on the collar. Come back for it or don't. The room was let by Monday, and the card, she noticed later, had been taken.
