Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold colour tattoo shows a pink lipstick with a gold case, flanked by two pink five-petal flowers with green leaves. The design has dark outlines and flat, solid fills with small highlights on the lipstick. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against pale skin, with a dark tattoo and a striped sleeve visible at the edges.

Nell Abbott had sold her good wool coat to pay the toll at Hanwell lock, and by the time the barge Marigold reached the bend below the mill she had nothing left to trade but the lipstick in her apron pocket. It was pink wax in a gold case, worn smooth at the corners. Her mother had given it to her and said a woman who went onto the water should always carry something bright to show the men on the banks.

The keeper at Sallow Weir was a grey man with a dog that would not stop barking. He wanted a penny for the horse, a penny for the dog, and a penny for the wind. Nell gave him nothing but a long look and a dab of colour on her lips, and he laughed until he had to sit down on the gate beam. He waved her through for nothing and told her the river had a habit of taking whatever a person was too proud to give away.
Past the weir the water ran slow and brown, and the Marigold drifted into the reeds where the old mill race used to be. Nell stood at the bow and unscrewed the case. The wax had softened in the heat of her pocket. She held it out over the water and waited, and the river, which had no mouth, made a sound like someone clearing their throat.
Nobody saw what came of it. In spring the bank below the weir was thick with five-petalled blossom, pink as a fresh cut, with leaves so green they looked wet. The keeper's dog would sit among them and bark at nothing. Nell never sold another thing on the river, and the men on the banks, when they passed her barge, always touched their caps and asked after the flowers.
