Small script phrase on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person is photographed from behind, with their hair in a loose bun and bare upper back visible. A small, delicate script tattoo reads lux in tenebris, positioned centrally between the shoulder blades. The thin black linework and plain black and white photograph keep the focus on the lettering against the pale background.

Sit closer, the fire's gone to ash and the abbot has locked the woodstore again, so we'll share what warmth we have. Brother Aldous was the finest hand in the scriptorium at Saint Ebba's, and that winter he had one job: to finish the Gospel of the Lame Stonemason before the thaw. He worked by a single tallow candle set in a cracked bowl, its wick trimmed so short it hissed.

One night the candle guttered and died while he was halfway through a capital L. In the dark he heard old Brother Piers laugh under his breath, the way he did when someone had been careless with the vellum. 'Light is a thing you carry in,' Piers said, 'not a thing the room gives you.' Aldous took it for the sort of riddle old men keep for the young, and said so, and Piers only chuckled and shuffled off towards the cloister.
Aldous sat in the black for an hour, fingers resting on the page, feeling for the letters he had already laid down. Then he understood. He did not need to see the words, for he had written every one of them. He fished the last stub of candle from his sleeve, struck the flint, and by its small flare he saw that the line he had feared was ruined was true and clean. Across the room, faint as breath, someone had banked the brazier and left a single coal glowing red.
Piers never admitted to carrying that coal through the cold, and Aldous never asked. The Gospel was finished by Candlemas, and the letter L on its first page still catches the eye as though it holds a small sun of its own.
