Black fine line script tattoo reading live laugh love with a continuous underline, across the upper back below the neck.

Live laugh love script across upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a woman with her hair up in a loose bun, showing the phrase live laugh love in black cursive script across the upper back, just below the base of the neck. The linework is fine and even, and the words are joined by a single horizontal stroke that runs through and beyond them. A thin silver chain sits at the nape of the neck, and the image is in natural colour with the tattoo in black ink.

Dear Nell,

The sign for the Harbour Tea Rooms went up on Tuesday, and I got the spacing wrong. Mr Pargeter wanted 'Live Laugh Love' across the window in gold leaf, three words with a stroke underneath, the way you'd underline a sum you were proud of. I laid it out in pencil first, as you taught me, and it looked fine until I stood back on the pavement and saw the line ran past the last word like a rope someone had forgotten to tie off.

I nearly repainted it. Then I remembered the old boat signwriter at Whitby, who said a stroke that runs beyond the words is not an error, it is the hand saying it has more to say. So I left it, and Mr Pargeter came out in his apron, squinted at it for a long minute, and said his wife would like it. He paid me in cash and a pot of cold tea.

I tell you this because you asked last week whether I still think about the boat sign, the one I painted for your mother's cousin before the war. I do. The gold had worn to brown by the end, and the stroke under the name had flaked, but the name was still legible under the varnish. I think that's what the line is for.

Anyway, come up on Sunday. I'll show you the window in the morning light before the sun gets round to the glass.

Your father, Tom
