Cactus in a decorated pot with red flowers
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A green cactus with dark outlines and needle-like spines rises from a brown pot decorated with a pink scalloped motif and orange bands. Red flowers with green leaves sit either side of the pot. Solid colour fills and shading are used throughout, with bold black linework on a light skin background.

Dear Ruth,

The crate came off the Esperanza on Tuesday with its lid nailed down and a smell of wet straw leaking out of the gaps. Inside, wrapped in a sack that had once held coffee, was a clay pot painted with pink scallops round its belly and orange bands at the rim. The cactus stood up out of it like a man who has been told to wait and will not sit. Three arms, every one of them bristling. I have had my hands bled on worse.
Cook Tomas paid for it with the last of his wages, and then he was gone at Falmouth without his boots, which I now wear, so the cactus owes me something. It is not a fair trade. Nothing about that boy was fair. He told me the red flowers on the pot were the ones that open for the night, but I think he was making it up to make me smile, the way you always did.
I put it on the sill of the back room facing the harbour, where the boats come round the wall at six. Yesterday the red flowers came out on the pot's edge, bright as the paint, and this morning a gull landed on the rim and sat there with its head cocked, looking at the spines as if it had been asked a question. I did not shoo it. Come and see it at the Easter fair and bring the boys. I will show them the plant that outlasted a sailor.
Love, Maud
