The llama had worn the bowler hat to the wedding of the goat's second cousin, and by the time the fiddler struck up, everyone in the valley had agreed it was the most ridiculous thing they had ever seen. Nobody told him. Pell, who kept the inn at the top of the pass, said a man with a monocle could look down his nose at anything he liked, provided the monocle stayed in.

The trouble began in the second week of snow. Three drovers arrived shouting about a fox in the stable, a bear on the road, and a widow's cow lost in a drift. Each wanted the llama to settle it, because he was the only one in the valley who never raised his voice. He listened to all three with his head tilted, polished the glass against his sleeve, and said, very quietly, that the fox would sleep better in a barn of its own, that the bear had only come for the honey, and that the cow was standing behind the widow's own woodpile, which she would have seen if she had looked up from her grievances.

They stood in the cold and stared at him. Then the widow laughed until she had to sit on the step, and the drovers, feeling foolish, laughed too, and the fox was found asleep in the hay where the llama had said it would be.

That night Pell found the monocle hanging on its cord from a nail by the door, swaying slightly, as if someone had only just let go of it. Under it, in pencil, he had written the one rule he had never needed to say aloud: save all the drama for your llama.
