Mrs Pellow kept the boarding house on Gull Terrace for forty years and never once let a guest bring an animal through the door, so when the man in room four arrived with a tin of biscuits and a canvas bag that seemed to breathe, I knew I would be the one to find out what was in it. He stood on the step with his hat pulled low, as if the wind owed him money.

The bag held a wooden elephant no longer than my hand, its paint worn to the grain at the trunk. He said his grandfather had won it at a fairground in Hastings the summer the sea came over the pier. It had always faced the wrong way, he said, looking back at the town instead of out to sea. Every night he set it on the windowsill of room four with its trunk raised, as though it were testing the air for weather.

On the last morning of August the window was open and the elephant was gone. Mrs Pellow swore nobody had come in, and she was not a woman who swore. I found it at low tide, two hundred yards out, standing on a ribbon of wet sand with its trunk in the air, pointing west towards the lighthouse as if it had finally made up its mind.

I waded out in my boots and lifted it down. The paint was cold and the trunk was crooked, so I turned it round to face the sea, and I set it back on the sand where the water could reach it first. When I looked back from the step, the tin of biscuits was still in my hands and the tide was already filling the hollows around it.
