The blue butterfly came down the pass on the third morning, just as Father said it would, and it settled on the cairn above the wool shed as if it had paid the toll. I have been watching it since. Mrs Pryce says a butterfly on the pass means a letter is coming, but she says that about everything, including the weather.

The road over Bwlch Gwyn was shut again after the frost, so the carrier left our parcels at the chapel gate and the boy from the farm below brought them up in a barrow. The largest was the iron lantern bracket from Liverpool, the one with the looping arms and the curled tail that Father ordered in the spring. It fits the lintel exactly, though I had to file one loop down with the little file you left in the drawer. I hope you do not mind.

You think I should sell up and come down to the valley. I have not decided. But on Sunday, when the cloud sat on the pass all afternoon, I hung the lantern out and its shadow fell across the stones, a butterfly with its wings open and one feeler curled back toward the house. Father always said the pass greeted travellers that way. I think it was how he said goodbye.
