Heart and anchor fine line tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of an outline heart, with a single continuous line that trails down and ends in an anchor. A small cross sits on the line beside the heart. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the photograph is taken close up against a warm, softly lit background with the ear visible at the top left.

Dear Nell, The wind's come round to the north-west and the Mersey is slapping at the hull like it has a grudge. I've been sat in the wheelhouse since four with a flask of your tea, which has gone cold, and a pencil I keep turning over in my fingers. Dad always said you could tell a good knot by the way it sits when nobody's watching it.

The job this week was the mooring on the Birkenhead side. Old Tommy Greave, who has tied up boats here since before I could walk, showed me how to run a single line from one bollard to the next without a join, so the whole length takes the strain and nothing snaps at the weak place. He said the trick is never to cut it. Every time it wears, you splice in fresh rope so it's still one run of it. I thought he was being sentimental. He wasn't.
The little cross I scratched beside the line, where we spliced it in the cold last winter, is the spot you'd never see unless you knew. Anchor at the bottom, heart at the top, and all of it one piece. I've been thinking that's a fair way to describe us, you and me and Mam, even with the miles between.
Tommy's shackle came loose at the turn this morning and he laughed like a boy. I'll post this when the tide's gone out. Keep the kettle warm, and tell Mam the anchor is holding.
