Black ink fine line drawing of a lotus with a dotted border and a looping chain below, sketched on white paper beside a black fine liner pen.

Lotus and loop line drawing design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn design of a lotus flower with a dotted band across the top, a small spiral at the centre of the bloom, and a vertical chain of stacked loops ending in three dots. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is drawn in black ink on plain white paper. A black pigment liner pen lies diagonally across the lower right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Win, I have had your parcel for three days and still cannot bring myself to open the second envelope. The first one held the drawings, as you said it would, and I laid them out on the kitchen table the way you used to lay out your sister's dressmaking patterns, pinned flat at the corners so the wind from the back door would not lift them. The lotus is exactly as you described it on the telephone, the petals fanned out like the hand of a card player who has seen his luck turn. I could not work out the little spiral at the middle until I held the sheet up to the window and saw it was a letter, a backward letter, the one Father always signed with.

The loops below it are the part I keep returning to. Seven of them, Mrs Fenwick says, though I count only six when I am being honest, and they run down the page like a chain of knots a boatman would tie before the tide turns. Then the three dots at the foot, as neat as the stops on a telegram. You said the pen was the one from the stationer's on Market Street, the black one that bled if you held it too long in one place. I can imagine your hand going slowly, with your tongue at the corner of your mouth the way it did when you were nine and trying to draw the church.

So here is my answer, Win, and you may do with it what you like. Keep the design. Have it inked wherever you think it will hold. But do not send me the second envelope yet. I want to finish this cup of tea first, and then I will take the pattern out to the post box myself and see whether the boy at the sorting office can read a backward letter as well as I can.
