Lotus and unalome on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black line tattoo runs along the forearm, with a looping swirl that resolves into a lotus flower and a short row of three dots at the end. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the design is simple and small. The ink is black on pale skin, and the tattoo is centred on the forearm against a dark top and a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted the coats for eleven winters before the new manager asked her to draw the lines on the dance floor. He wanted a path from the doors to the stage, painted in white on the sprung boards, so the couples would know where to walk between sets. She took a tin of chalk and a length of string and began at the cloakroom hatch.

The string would not lie straight. Every time she pulled it taut, the chalk drifted, and by the third attempt the line had begun to curl back on itself, a loop like a cat's tail finishing a sentence. Her mother had worn a mark like that on a silver chain, a tiny spiral that ended in a flower, and used to say the path to the flower was the only part worth walking. Nell had thought that rubbish when she was young.

The band came in at seven. Trumpets, a bassist who smelt of peppermint, couples in their Sunday best tripping over her chalk. Nobody complained. A girl in a green dress stopped at the loop, laughed, and stepped into the curl instead of around it, turning slowly until she reached the centre, where Nell had left a small ring of chalk like a bud.

When the last waltz finished, Nell knelt and swept the boards with her sleeve. The loop had blurred into the wood grain. She left the bud where it was, and the three dots she had added at the end, one for each of the doors, and went to find her coat.
