Chi Rho with Alpha and Omega on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink Chi Rho symbol, formed by the Greek letters chi and rho, sits on the forearm with an alpha to the left and an omega to the right. The lines are bold and slightly uneven with a hand-drawn feel, and the design has small decorative curls at the top and base. The photograph is taken at close range in dim, warm light with the arm across a textured cushion.

Brother Osric had been warned that ink would not take on vellum scraped too thin, so on the morning the abbot came to inspect the Gospel of Hexham he had spent three nights on a single page. The margin held a cross of two crossed strokes, the first two letters of a Greek name that had gone out of fashion among the younger brothers. Beside it, small and careful, he had set the first and last letters of the alphabet, the A and the O, as though the book might otherwise forget where it began.

The abbot held the leaf up to the window and said nothing for so long that the cellarer coughed. Then he asked why the curls at the top of the rho were so unsteady. Osric told him the truth: his hand had shaken on the third night, when the lamp oil ran low and the cold rose through the flagstones, and he had not wanted to scrape the work away and lose the day. The abbot turned the leaf over, looked at the back, and laughed, a short bark that startled a wren from the rafters.

"Leave it," he said. "Whoever reads this in five hundred years will think the scribe was in a hurry, and they won't be wrong."

Osric stayed at the desk after the others had gone to vespers. He dipped his quill and, in the blank corner of the next folio, drew a tiny cross with a wobble in one arm. Then he sat looking at it until the bell rang and the candle guttered out.
