Colour tattoo on a forearm of a red and purple lotus flower above black Sanskrit script and a green Om symbol, linked by black swirling linework.

Lotus flower and Om symbol on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A red and purple lotus flower with a yellow centre sits at the top of the design, shaded with soft pink and violet tones. Below it, black script runs vertically between thin swirling vine-like lines, and a larger green Om symbol with darker green shading anchors the bottom. Small clear gems are set into the design, and the composition runs the length of the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the ones at the back, because the water is loud this season and I will not shout a story that wants to be whispered. You have all seen the lotus on the mud-bank at the ferry. Every spring it comes up out of the black silt, and every spring some fool says it is dirty and should be pulled. Listen to what the mud did once.

There was a ferryman named Tarun Sohl who kept a green boat and a yellow lamp, and he had a daughter called Anju who wanted to cross to the far temple to learn the chanting. He told her the river would take her if she went alone. She went anyway, carrying a pot of seed-oil and a bundle of dried lotus pods, because her grandmother had told her that where roots go down into dark water, something always rises. Halfway across, the current snatched the pot and it broke against a stone, spilling oil in a thin gold line. The line spread over the surface and the water began to hum, the way a bell hums after the striker has moved away.

Anju did not drown. She sat on the stone and listened until the humming sang a single round sound, the one the old priests draw in the sand with their fingers, the one that curls back into itself like a vine. She sang it back. The lotus pods she had carried split open on the stone, and the seeds rolled into the mud, and by the next monsoon there was a red bloom where no bloom had been.

So when you see the green sound at the foot of a picture, remember it is not a prayer for the sky. It is the sound a girl made on a rock while the river tried to take her. Go home now. The ferry leaves at dusk, and the lamp is lit.
