A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys the miller's daughter had no dowry worth the name, only the blue glass beads her grandmother strung on waxed thread and the lotus pond behind the mill that nobody else bothered to clear. When the reeve's son came courting with two cows and a silver cup, her father said the girl could wed him or stay unwed in the kitchen.

On the morning of the wedding, Dilys went down to the pond before the church bell. The lotus had opened in the night, pale at the edges and teal at the heart, where the water held the sky. She cut three stems with her grandmother's knife, pinned their heads together, and hung the beads beneath them so the drops swung like a chandelier from the arch of a bridge.

At the church door the reeve's son looked at the bloom in her hands and laughed. Then the old women of the parish, who had been gossiping about the cows, went quiet. Mother Sayer touched one of the drops and said her own mother had worn the same pattern, and had been left at the altar by a man who wanted cattle. The reeve's son looked at the silver cup in his hand for a long moment, then set it down on the step.

Dilys did not marry him. She married Tomas the ferryman, who had rowed her across the pond every spring to gather lotus and had never once asked for a cow. Their daughter wore the beads at her own wedding, and the pond still opens its petals in the early light, each one edged with the same fine dark line.
