Mistress Idris Vane had measured the kingdom of Harrowmere for eleven years, and she had never once been asked to measure a flower. The decree arrived on a Tuesday, sealed in green wax, ordering that the Lily Mere be bounded by a true equilateral triangle, three posts driven at its corners, so that the Crown could tithe the water by its sides. The lotus had other ideas. Every morning the great bloom on the eastern bank opened wider than the morning before, its petals stacked like the pages of a ledger nobody had finished reading.

She set out with chain, lodestone and a boy named Corrin who carried the posts. The bud above the bloom leaned over the water like a question, and the lotus would not be pinned. Wherever she sighted a corner, a petal had already unfolded across it. By the fourth day the boy was weeping quietly into his sleeve, and Idris was tallying her figures by candlelight, finding that every line she drew came out a hair short of closing.

On the fifth morning she stopped trying to fit the flower to the triangle. She laid the chain down through the petals instead, one edge cutting the bloom in two, and counted the stippled seeds at its heart: four hundred and twelve, black dots against pale water. The number was exact. The Crown's line was exact. Between them there was room enough for a flower to be exactly itself.

She sent the report back by pigeon with a single sentence. The boundary runs through the lotus, and the lotus has agreed to it.
