Lotus mandala tattoo on the sternum
Dotwork · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A large symmetrical lotus mandala sits centred on the chest, built from layered petals, a central oval medallion and fine radiating detail. The design is rendered in black ink using fine lines and stippled dots, giving it a delicate, lace-like texture. A hand rests on the left of the chest, a wristwatch and rings are visible, and a coloured tattoo with red and yellow tones is partly visible on the right arm.

Dear Win,

The lace frame at Hollis and Dunn has been silent since Tuesday, when Mr Pargeter sent the girls home early over the coal business. I have spent the hours with the pattern book you left on the dresser. You will be glad to hear I have not wasted the paper. I have been drawing the lotus you always said was too fussy to stitch, the one with the seven rings of petals and the little oval in the middle like a cameo brooch.
Mother says it looks like a church window left out in the rain. I told her that is the point of it. Each petal wants a tiny dot where the thread would pinch, and you have to lift the pen and set it down again, over and over, until your wrist aches and the whole thing holds together. Mrs Ashdown at the bobbin end says it took her a winter to learn to make a net that flat, and she still cannot manage the centre without swearing.
Something happened on Thursday I want to tell you properly. The new man from Leicester came into the shop asking for a copy of the old Chantilly design, and when Mr Dunn turned the book round, the man laughed and rolled up his shirt sleeve to show a lotus just like it, inked where anyone could see. He said his mother had drawn it for him on the back of a ration card. I did not believe a word of it, but I could not stop looking at the lines.
I am sending this with the card so you can judge the petals yourself. Keep the pencil; I have another.
Love, Edie
