Lotus flower and semicolon on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline lotus flower sits on the inner wrist, with a short vertical line of dots above it and a semicolon and a small looped shape below it, all joined by a thin stem. The linework is fine and even, filled with solid black ink and no shading. The photo is taken straight on against a plain skin background with a blurred floor behind the arm.

The bargeman's widow came down to the Tarrow ferry every morning with a ledger under her arm, because her husband had owed the crown forty-one pennies and she meant to be the one who paid it off. Nobody in Caddock Reach thought she would manage it. The river was low that summer and the mud along the landing had cracked into plates the size of cartwheels.

On the ninth day of the drought she found a single bud pushing up through the silt beside the old stakes. It was pale green and folded tight. When she knelt to look, a row of small dark dots ran across the mud above it, as neat as rain marks on slate, and a thin stem ran down beneath it to a loop of root knotted like a bowline. She had seen the clerk make that same mark a thousand times in the margins of the tax rolls. He called it the stop that does not stop, the sign for a sentence that is not yet finished.

She did not pull the bud. She bought a jar of ink from the chandler and painted the mark on the ferry post in letters as tall as her arm, then sat beneath it with the ledger open on her knees. Each evening she wrote a line, and each morning the lotus had opened another petal. By the first autumn rain the whole reach was a crowd of white flowers, and the fishermen poled their boats between them.

The forty-one pennies were paid in October. Beneath the last entry she wrote nothing at all, and when the clerk came to collect he complained that the ledger was unfinished. She told him that was the point.
