Love Fearlessly script behind the ear
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a woman's head and neck, with her dark hair tied up in a bun. A black script tattoo reading Love Fearlessly follows the hairline and neck behind her ear. The ink is solid black with clean, flowing letterforms, set against soft natural light and a blurred background.

The ink on the telegram was still wet when Mr Askew brought it up the hill, so I know the words came off the wire exactly as they were sent. Your father would have hated the spelling of Harrowgate on the envelope. He always did think the postmaster in the valley was a fool. Never mind that. Read the last line twice, the way you used to read the hymns when you were small and pretended not to know the tune.
Love fearlessly, it says. That was the whole message, nothing about the boat or the weather or whether the ferry runs on Tuesdays. Your brother signed it with his initial and then, underneath, the words in his neat slanting hand, as if he had been practising them at the kitchen table for a week. I suppose he had. Boys who are frightened always write the shortest letters.
I have walked down to the harbour every morning since, and the gulls there have stopped bothering with me. The wind has turned west, which means the Grey Sisters will have the sea running high by the weekend. Put your good coat on, and take the lamp from the scullery shelf. The oil is full.
Come home when you can, and bring the word back with you. I want to hear you say it aloud in the parlour, under the clock that has never once kept proper time.
Love, Nan
