Black script lettering that appears to read Live Fearlessly on the back of a woman's neck, behind her ear, in a lettering style.

Script lettering behind the ear

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close view from behind shows a woman with her dark hair pulled up, revealing black script words tattooed on the skin behind her ear and along the neck. The lettering is built from smooth, even linework with no shading, and the first word is partly hidden by her hair. The image is in colour only as far as the skin, hair and dark background allow, and the composition is tightly framed on the neck and shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad always said a word wants room to breathe, so when Mrs Okonedo brought me a scrap of card with LIVE FEARLESSLY pencilled across it in her careful hand, I told her it would need a longer line than she'd reckoned on. She laughed and said that was exactly why she had walked past the other signwriter by the bus station and come up Harbour Street instead.

I spent three evenings on the layout at the bench under the window, the gas lamp hissing and Tommy next door shouting at the wireless. Script is a cheat, really. You let the joins do the work. The F I drew four times before it stopped looking like a man dropping a basket. I used a number two rigger and a rule my uncle had given me, and I kept every stroke so even that the black never once sulked on the brush.

When she came back to collect it, she didn't want it on the card. She wanted it on the side of the van, where her husband could read it from the driver's seat every morning on the way to the docks. I told her the van was too small for both words in one go, so we'd have to split them across the panel, and she looked at me sideways and asked whether I thought she'd end up in the local paper. I said only if the paper had a sense of humour.

She paid in coppers and half a crown, and I stood on the kerb while she drove off. The sun caught the wet paint and the letters came up bright and backward in the shop window behind me, the way every sign I've ever done looks until somebody reads it properly.
