Love fearlessly script on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows the back of a person's head, with dark hair pulled up into a bun. The words Love Fearlessly are written in black cursive script along the neck, curving from behind the ear down towards the hairline. The image is warm in tone, with the ink appearing as a clean, single-colour line against the skin.

The hall smells of floor polish and the sausage rolls nobody has touched yet, and you have been standing by the trestle table long enough to read every name badge twice. Nobody is wearing the same face they had at eighteen. Your hands know that before your eyes do, because they keep reaching for the lanyard you were never given.

Then Maren Pryce turns round near the urn, and the years fold up like a letter. She was the girl who wrote in joined-up capitals on every exercise book, the one who copied out song lyrics on the back of the bus timetable. In Year Eleven she wrote four words inside your chemistry folder in purple gel pen and underlined them twice: Love fearlessly, you idiot. You never told her you had kept the page.
"You came," she says, as if it were a dare she has been waiting to win.
"I nearly didn't," you say. "I'm still not sure what I'd have said." She laughs and tells you about the bakery she runs now, the sourdough, the divorce she describes as a bad recipe. You tell her about the job you left, and the flat you moved into, and the thing you did last spring that frightened you so much you were sick in a car park afterwards. She doesn't flinch. She just nods, the way she used to nod when someone else's sum was finally right.
When the lights dip for the raffle, she hands you a pen from her bag. It's purple. Of course it is. You write nothing on the programme, only pass it back to her with a small underline beneath her name, and she reads it and grins like the girl who used to ring your mum to say you were coming round.
