LOVE lettering on clasped wrists
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with one letter tattooed on each wrist. The letters L and O sit on one wrist and V and E on the other, reading LOVE across the pair. The bold serif letters are rendered in solid black ink, and the monochrome photograph is sharply lit and set against a dark background.

He had bought the stamps from a retired typesetter in Hebden Bridge who swore they had been cut for a Victorian printer's bench. Only four of them had survived the move: an L, an O, a V and an E, each the size of a thumb and worn smooth at the edges. Ruth had wanted the shop's name pressed into every cob loaf. Eli had said the letters were too heavy for bread. She had said that was the point.
In the end they split the word between two trays, L and O on the left, V and E on the right, so no single loaf could spell it alone. Customers would have to buy one of each and carry them home together, which Eli said was bad for trade and Ruth said was the best business plan either of them had ever had. When the first man came in at six, coat buttoned wrong, he looked at the two loaves, then at her, and asked whether they were meant to be read in order.
Ruth slid the tray across the counter and said they were, and that the second half was still rising.
