Matching infinity symbols on two wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two clasped hands are shown in a black and white photograph, with an infinity symbol tattooed on the wrist of each hand. The tattoos are drawn in thin, even black outline with no shading or fill. The soft monochrome tones and close framing keep the focus on the two small symbols.

Sit yourself down on that bench, mind the nail, and I'll tell you why the two ferries at Saltcombe never cross the harbour at the same time. My mother told it better, God rest her, and she had it from old Ned Tregear, who was there when the channel was first charted.

The sandbar at the harbour mouth shifted every winter, so the ferry men stopped drawing a straight course on the chart. They drew a loop instead, out past the bell buoy, round the shingle spit and back past the chapel steps. Pollard and Ida Quayle were cousins who cut their first pins on the same pier. Ida took the outward run and Pollard the return, and every journey they met at the middle, where the two lines crossed like the figure eight on a gravestone. They'd touch hands over the gunwale, nothing more, and carry on.
One November the fog came in thick as fleece, and Ida's boat never came back round the spit. Pollard rowed that loop every hour until the light went, calling her name at the crossing point. Near dawn he heard an answering knock of oars from the chapel side. She had lost her bearings and gone the wrong way round, and the loop had simply brought her home by the other road.
That's why the chart is an eight and not a circle, boy. A circle has a start, and you'd spend your life arguing about where you began. An eight just keeps you moving, and you pass the same place from both sides, so you can't really lose it.
