LOVE lettering split across two wrists
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with one wrist showing the letters LV and the other showing OE, so the word LOVE is split between them. The lettering is solid black with a classic serif shape and crisp edges, with no shading. The image is in a natural colour photograph, with the tattooed wrists and clasped fists in the centre and a dark background behind them.

You are the only signwriter left on the line, and the job that wakes you at five is repainting the canopy lettering at Halden Junction before the first commuter trains. Your father did the same work before you, standing on a trestle with a sable brush and a tin of Brunswick black. He taught you that letters must be cut crisp at the edge, with no shading, because a sign is read at speed by people who have somewhere else to be.

Your father and Mrs Okonedo, who ran the buffet for thirty years, had a quarrel about the two ends of platforms one and two. She wanted the word on the footbridge, he wanted it on the walls where the cold came through. In the end they split it, L and V on the north wall, O and E on the south, so the word only reads if you stop on the bridge and look down at both halves at once. You have walked over it a thousand times without stopping.
This morning the fog is thick enough that the southbound driver calls out the platforms by number. You climb the bridge with the brush in your coat pocket and stand where the two halves meet. Below, the letters sit on the wet brick like two strangers holding hands across a gap. You take out the tin, dip the brush, and go over the E twice, so that when the sun finally clears the roofline, anyone waiting for a train can read the word from the bridge.
